Squishies are squeezable toys or collectibles designed to deform when pressed. Some slowly return to their original shape, while others are moldable, non-rebound or filled. Who invented squishies?
There is no single widely documented inventor or exact launch year for the broad category now called squishies. Modern squishies are closely associated with Japanese kawaii-style collectibles, while different makers introduced foam, rubber-like, filled and silicone designs at different times. Claims that one company made the “first ever squishy” should be treated cautiously unless they refer to a specific patented product or a documented brand release.
When did squishy toys become popular?
Squishy toys became much more visible through collecting communities and product videos during the 2010s. Slow squeezes, visible rebound and detailed shapes made the category easy to demonstrate online. That popularity does not give the category one clear invention date.
What types of squishies are there?
- Slow-rising squishies: return to shape gradually after a squeeze.

What are squishies made of?
Product listings may describe foam, thermoplastic rubber (TPR), silicone, gel or other fillings. These terms are not interchangeable, and a category label alone does not confirm a product’s complete composition, testing or suitability for a particular age. Check the specific listing and any manufacturer or seller documentation available for that item.
Are squishies safe?
Safety has to be considered for the specific product, its materials and filling, its condition, the intended age group and the warnings supplied with it. A government finding about one tested sample or recalled model should not be applied to every squishy.
The Danish Environmental Protection Agency analyzed 12 specific squishies in 2018 and reported problematic emissions under its stated test scenario. A separate 2026 U.S. CPSC recall applied to two specific Orb Funkee models with a specified date code. Neither action proves that every other squishy is unsafe or safe.
